What Is Sortation Equipment? STIQ's essential segmentation guide

With STIQ's 2026 sortation equipment report releasing in September 2026, here is a breakdown of the sortation equipment market- what it is, what it does, and how to think about it. From tilt trays, cross belts, and mobile sortation robots, we explain it all.

The sortation equipment market can be confusing, with confusing and overlapping terminology, and increasingly blurred use cases for what specific equipment actually does.

What is sortation equipment?

Typically, sortation equipment is automated material handling machinery that identifies specific indivudal items (eaches, cases or parcels), and routes it to the correct destination (a chute, a tote, a vehicle etc.). 

This covers a whole world of different use cases, from a loop system covering a whole distribution hub through to a range of sortation robots organising eaches into the correct order. Funamentally, what is important that each solution will induct the item, identify it, and send it to the right destination.

The most important distinction: pre-pack vs post-pack

At STIQ, we segment the market by where it fits in the fulfilment flow: pre-pack sortation versus post-pack sortation.

Pre-pack sortation explained

Pre-pack sortation handles loose units (or "eaches") before they reach the packing station. This focuses on three major concepts:

Batch picking: where pickers add items from many different orders into the same containers and sorting them into individual orders, speeding up the picking process. We have heard an increasing use of ASRS / goods-to-person systems to do the batch picking, which is then sorted further by a unit sorter

Pre-loading & buffering: traditionally done using a pocket sorter and done to speed up fulfilment for particular order profiles (such as pre-loading fast selling SKUs into the system)

Store fulfilment: unit sorters have historically been used to sort eaches inducted manually from cases into store-bound totes

Post-pack sortation explained

Post-pack sortation equipment handles items once they are packed and labelled. Primarily this refers to parcel sortation. Typically this fits into three categories.

Linear and loop sorters: used with a variety of technologies (cross-belt, tilt tray etc.), these cover a broad range of payload carrier configurations and throughput capacities. Linear sorters are configured in a straight line with chutes either side, whereas a loop sorter is configured in a loop. This takes more space, but has higher throughput and buffering capabilities 

Wheel sorters: these include activated roller belt (ARB) and pivot wheel sorters, which can divert cases. These can also be used for palletisation and sequencing, allowing for flexibility

Conveyor sorters: these are typically lower throughput, but can manage larger items such as pallets

Increasingly, mobile robot sortation is being used to augment systems, with technological advancements increasing to blur the lines between use cases.

Sorter payload form factors

The second dimension to consider is then the payload form factor of a sorter technology. 

Cross Belt, Tilt Tray, Split Tray and Horseshoe are the primary form factors with Paddle/Pusher primarily applied with conveyor sortation, with Cross Belt and Tilt Tray forms applied to mobile and batch sortation. However, many edge cases exist and this is also becoming increasingly blurred.

Sortation equipment: what is typically used, when, and why?

How the sortation equipment is deployed is typically defined by the throughput requirements and payload size of the units being move. Other factors such as fragility, range of SKUs, and packaging material are also taken into account. 

Different sectors will also approach sortation differently, as SKU ranges will fluctuate less in an FMCG environment versus an ecommerce or third party logistics warehouse where things can be more dynamic. Requirements for flexibility are therefore different.

Whilst we have visualised the sortation equipment below, this is becoming an increasingly fluid market. Mobile sortation robots are moving up the throughput axis, whilst more traditional fixed sortation equipment is more able to target smaller deployments as the cost / benefit trade off improves the ROI of the solutions.

Creative warehouse designers are finding new ways to apply existing tools, and grey areas are increasing in size. 

We are also seeing sortation equipment being used in a less siloed way, incorporating induction technology and other solutions to increase the overall throughput of the system, rather than focusing on individual machines. Particuarly, we see an increase in the use of sortation equipment with ASRS systems to get more out of existing infrastructure.
